Welcome to Millgate Cottage, located in the scenic Kwa-Zulu Natal Midlands!

Come and enjoy the good life in this lovely setting. Millgate Cottage is set amid beautiful countryside, on the R103, between Nottingham Road and Howick, on the Midlands Meander. It is conveniently located for private schools in the area, only 5 km from Michaelhouse, and is within easy reach of Midmar Dam and many Drakensberg resorts. It is also within easy driving distance of Mooi River (25 minutes) to the North and Howick (20 minutes) and Pietermaritzburg (35 minutes) to the South. We offer pleasant and comfortable accommodation suitable for long stays or even one -night stop-overs. With several well-known wedding venues nearby, we are perfectly situated to cater for the needs of wedding guests and family.

Shazorro , our German Bistro offers a selection of German cuisine, pastries and breads, to be enjoyed indoors or on our deck overlooking our wonderful gardens.

Mole Hill Clothing is known for its outstanding quality. Mole Hill sells formal and casual shirts for men and women which can be made to order. Wherever possible top quality South African fabric is used.

The Glass Studio, including shop, features an array of sandblasted and kiln-slumped glass cheese boards and mobiles, stained glass ornaments and bric-a-brac. Hand crafted wooden toys, clothing, decor items and jewellery are also available at the shop.

The Art Gallery, featuring a selection of fine art by resident and local artists is adjacent to the Glass Studio. We also have ranges of antique bone china for sale.

Putt-Putt, nine hole putt-putt course in the beautiful garden surrounding the Bistro, where children and their parents can test their golfing skills.

Mineral Water, Our water has been certified 100% pure , sourced from a natural underground stream that has its origins in the Drakensburg Mountains it
is envied far and wide.

Millgate Cottage is the home of resident authors Ben and Jean Temkin. Ben is probably best known for his biography of Buthelezi, while Jean has made her name with the titles “Charting for Profit“, “More Charting for Profit” and “Even More Charting for Profit“.

Millgate Cottage has been named a Best Value Midlands Establishment.

The Cottages

Millgate Cottage has two self-catering cottages that come equipped with a full-size stove, fridge/freezer, microwave, crockery and cutlery. Heaters and fans are on hand and DSTV channels are available. Each cottage has a veranda with braai facilities.

Selected DSTV channels are available, ensuring that you won’t miss your favourite show or sporting event.

Millgate Cottage accepts one night booking except during, or adjacent to, public holidays and the Christmas period.

Cottage 1 can accommodate up to four (4) people. It features a bedroom with twin beds and en-suite bathroom, as well as a double sleeper couch in the living room.

Cottage 2 can accommodate up to six (6) people. It has two bedrooms with twin beds and also a double sleeper couch in the living room.

The cottages overlook a beautiful view of lush farmland with the foothills of the Drakensberg mountains in the distance.

2023 Rates:

R600( weeknight)/R650(weekend) per person per night sharing
Children under 12 stay for 50% off adult rates.
Babies under 2 years with own cot or sleeping with parents stay free

For all cottages and suites:

Guests have free use of our mini golf course.Available when open or by prior arrangement. Friends of guests are welcome.
Our onsite bistro : Shazzorro is open Fiday till Sunday and public holidays.
Guests are required to book in before 5pm, unless by prior arrangement. Rooms must be vacated by 11am on the day of departure.
We allow pets in our cottages, please enquire beforehand. We have our own dogs, cats and horses onsite.
Bookings will be confirmed on receipt of a 50% deposit made by bank transfer or by supplying us with your credit card details. Deposits on cancellations made at least 14 days before the booking date will be refunded, less a 15% handling fee. Deposits will be forfeit on cancellations made less than 14 days before the booking date.

Self-Catering Suites

Millgate also has three suites available, two of which come with self-catering facilities.

All suites are equipped with fans, heaters and DSTV to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Lulworth Cove

Lulworth Cove has twin beds, an en-suite bathroom, a kitchen and breakfast nook. A covered patio with braai facilities, Lulworth overlooks a private garden.

Kimmeridge

Kimmeridge has twin beds, a double sleeper couch in the lounge and a kitchenette. Full bathroom with bath and shower. A covered patio overlooking the private garden with braai facilities.

Durdledoor

Durdle Door has one double bed and an en-suite bathroom. Durdle Door is semi-self catering in that it has a fridge, microwave, toaster and kettle.

The suites feature a view of lush garden, backed by forest.

Braai facilities are available.

Backpackers

We have recently added a backpackers dormitory to our accommodation, consisting of two rooms, one with 6, comfortable, single beds the smaller room has a double bed. Basic accommodation with bedding is supplied with shared bathroom/toilet facilities. Price on enquiry.
